Description: This data set represents generalized bare earth 2 foot elevation contours of Pottawattamie County, Iowa, in the UTM projection, Zone 15, NAD83 Datum. The contours were developed using elevation data from the state of Iowa's LiDAR program. The original 1 meter lidar grids were generalized to 3 meter resolution, and the contouring program applied with a 2 foot interval processed 10 feet at a time, so the program would have enough memory to complete. Contour lines were simplified using a 2 foot tolerance, and lines less than 100 ft in length were discarded. Ten foot index contours are identified in the attribute table. Contours crossing water features sometimes have a triangular appearance due to lack of lidar returns over water and should be ignored.
Copyright Text: One meter bare earth DEMs were developed from lidar point data by the Iowa Geological and Water Survey, by Chris Kahle and Andy Asell using LP360 software. Extraction of 2 foot contours was performed by Jesse Soukup and Jim Giglierano using Arc GIS 9.3 software.

Description: The Iowa Cooperative Soil Survey (ICSS) is a partnership begun in 1966 of the Iowa Cooperative Extension Service and the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station at Iowa State University, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Division of Soil Conservation, and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. The general purpose of the ICSS is to coordinate the collection, compilation, interpretation, publication, dissemination, and use of soil surveys in Iowa. In 1987 a cooperative agreement was signed among the agencies to begin work on digitizing soil maps in the state. This web site was developed to provide a means of downloading the completed soil map data for use in Geographic Information System applications. This web site was developed and is maintained by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service in Ames, Iowa.
